Working in the (Sometimes Harsh) Light

I have had listeners ask me a lot lately why it is that so many gloom-and-doom prophets have appeared on Coast to Coast. Not too long ago John Lear was Art Bell’s guest (UFO Magazine v. 19.1), and repeated his dire prediction that when the truth is finally revealed about UFOs, it will mean that all humanity will be demoralized. Steve Bassett, one of my recent guests, refused to go along with that scenario.

I also recently hosted Wayne Green, who talked about another version of an “End of Days” scenario in which a planetoid strikes the Earth, causing massive death and destruction, except for the fortunate few who’ve managed to secure themselves space deep underground. I was not surprised to learn, therefore, that just the other day a near-Earth object had been discovered that astronomers, at first glance, believed might be coming close enough to our planet to explode in our atmosphere, causing significant damage to those below. The astronomers were about to alert President Bush, when they decided to wait to confirm their measurements, and, luckily, the asteroid was not on a collision course with us.

But there are other End of Days scenarios.

Recently, I have read and guests have told me, the breakdown in the ocean Gulf Stream conveyor belts will mean vast climatic changes around the globe. In fact, there is a news report from England that the Pentagon presented President Bush with a military analysis of what global warming will mean strategically for the United States. It’s not a pretty picture. Europe will be devastated by drought, China and Africa will experience famine on so vast a scale that the human toll will be enormous. Africans will seek to migrate in overwhelming numbers to Europe where the European population will impose Draconian measures to keep from being swallowed up. China may well launch a war just to feed itself.

The United States, as one of the more fortunate countries, will have Hobson’s choice. Feed itself or feed the world? What would you advise? Would you close our doors to the hungry seeking to cross our borders or would you open them? If the Pentagon report is correct, this is choice all of us will have to make.

Then there’s absolute reality that the world will be running out of oil in less than fifty years. This is not a gloom-and-doom prediction, I was told just the other night. It’s a fact. Even the Saudis, the world’s largest producers of crude, will be forced to cut back as oil becomes harder to pump. Think of the gas lines. Think of the hours spent just trying to figure out where your next tank of heating oil will come from. Think of gas and heating oil at five dollars plus a gallon.

Therefore, my listeners have asked me, what is it about the guests who’ve been appearing that are all gloom and doom? What’s the use?

My first answer is this. It’s our job to report the news even if the news is glum. It’s no great surprise that the world is running out of oil. It’s been running out of oil, increasingly, throughout the twentieth century. Cars consume oil. Planes consume oil. Modern industrial processing consumes oil. We’re using it up and nobody’s making new. But everyone’s known about the rate of oil consumption and, trust me, better minds than ours have figured out what new sources of energy they’re going to charge for when all the oil is gone. The machines won’t simply stop.

What about global warming? No surprise here. Scientists have been talking about this for about twenty years. The only shocker might be that we will see some of the discomforts in our lifetimes, rather than our grandchildren. Is it the end of the world? No. It’s not going to happen in one year or in five years. So we have time to prepare, especially if the dire warnings of the Pentagon are taken to heart by those in power. The easiest way to keep hungry people from fighting over food is to feed them.

So, keeping the story of Joseph and Pharaoh and famine in Egypt in mind, the prudent planner would begin storing the grain that farmer’s want to produce so as to be able to feed the rest of the world when the time comes. It’s not far-fetched. It’s already been done.

And as for the alien conspiracy? What’s there that we don’t already suspect? NASA will most likely announce within the next year or so that life existed or exists on Mars. We will probably find evidence of waterborne life on one of the moons of a planet in our solar system. And disclosure will take place with a whimper rather than a bang.

Thus, when people ask me—why all the stories of darkness, I simply relay them the answer my guest Sylvia Browne has repeatedly given when asked the very same questions. She’s said that there is one sure way to defeat the darkness. Light a candle. One candle, one small flame, defeats the darkest night. One single force for good can defeat an entire army of evil.

Accordingly, if we all simply pull together, focus our individual consciousnesses into a collective force for good, for hope, for the promise of the future, the solutions will gradually bubble up to the surface. We’ll find alternative energy sources—our energy companies probably already have them—in time to keep the machines running. We’ll develop solar, we’ll have fuel-cell cars, we’ll have far more efficient heating and cooling plants.

We will adjust to global warming and do what human beings have done since somebody figured out that scraping the edge of a rock makes a great cutting tool: We’ll adapt. We always have. If the oceans begin to encroach upon coastal cities, we’ll move inland. If some zones become less conducive to agriculture, other zones will become more conducive. The people who want to stay in frigid climates will do so; others will move. We have more than enough food now. We just have to distribute it better. When the need is upon us, we will do just that.

And as for that planetoid that may collide with us in June or September? Stay tuned. If we’re still here, I’ll be on the radio in October to talk about it.

The phone lines are open. UFO
